Science

At St Margaret Mary’s Catholic Junior School, we aim to provide a high-quality, all-inclusive Science education. Through the Developing Experts scheme of work, National Curriculum Science is contextualised and allows pupils to gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of how each strand of Science impacts on every aspect of life and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. Science lessons are designed to adopt a hands-on approach to exploring and developing scientific skills whilst challenging pupils to become effective problem solvers and critical thinkers. Our pupils can aspire to Scientific career pathways as the application of concepts learnt in the classroom are linked to industry and the world of work.

We recognise the importance of Science and as one of the core subjects taught in Primary School, we give the teaching and learning of Science the prominence it requires. All pupils are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science and, by working scientifically, pupils will understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

The National Curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Can plan different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions, including recognising and controlling variables where necessary
  • Can take measurements, using a range of scientific equipment, with increasing accuracy and precision, taking repeat readings when appropriate
  • Can record data and results of increasing complexity using scientific diagrams and labels, classification keys, tables and graphs
  • Can test results to make predictions to set up further comparative and fair tests
  • Can report and present findings from enquiries, including conclusions, causal relationships and explanations of and degree of trust in results, in oral and written forms such as displays and other presentations
  • Can identify scientific evidence that has been used to support or refute ideas or arguments.
